About Us
Amity founded Outside the Box in 2019 when her son's best friend was struggling to read. Noticing that this struggle affected his self esteem, she quickly dug her heels in with remediation and intervention, which was hugely successful. She holds firmly to the belief that reading is a “right” that EVERYONE should be able to attain regardless of their individual learning styles and challenges.
In 1999 she obtained her undergraduate degree in Human Development Family Studies along with minors in Sociology and Spanish from Indiana University. In 2005 she earned a Master’s of Arts Degree in Special Education from the University of Colorado. Both degrees have equipped her well in her career, and allow her to see and appreciate the whole child. She is certified in the Barton Reading and Spelling Program as an interventionist. Having 20+ years of experience in the field of education, she has witnessed many changes in the landscape and works closely with public schools to ensure there is continuity in the classroom and her 1:1 sessions with the students she serves. This collaboration ensures the best interest of the students she works with is first and foremost.
As a Special Education Advocate, she is passionate about walking closely with parents as they navigate the IEP and 504 processes. Her philosophy strongly encourages the training of parents to advocate for their children, eventually leading children to advocate for themselves.
In her free time she enjoys getting outside with her two children and husband for paddleboarding, traveling and hiking.
